“Life gives you plenty of time to do whatever you want to do if you stay in the present moment.” – Deepak Chopra
As I end Week 6 of my 90-day challenge, I’ve noticed a subtle but profound change in my writing and daily routine. What started as an exercise in crafting short stories and poems has become…different for me.
A quiet shift has taken place.
One that has sharpened my awareness of the world around me, and it’s this mindfulness that has begun to fuel my creativity in unexpected ways.
Writing has this incredible ability to open our eyes to life’s simplest details.
The kind we often overlook in the rush of everyday living. As I’ve written more stories and poetry, I’ve started noticing those small, beautiful moments: the way the sun gradually lights the sky in the early hours, the gentle rhythm of birds chirping as I walk through the neighbourhood, or the cool, quiet air in the mornings. These once unremarkable events have become sources of inspiration, pushing me to notice, reflect, and create with more intention.
Poetry, in particular, has challenged me to distil these fleeting sensations into words—capturing the emotion, the mood, and the stillness in concise and vivid imagery. I’ve been forced to slow down and pay attention in a way I hadn’t before. That sense of mindfulness, being fully present and observant, has been the true gift of Week 6, and it’s been a powerful tool in expanding my creative horizons.
This week wasn’t without its challenges.
Some days, I woke up later than planned, which meant prioritising getting my daughter ready for school and dropping her off before anything else. Those mornings threw my usual routine off balance, with my writing and walks happening at different times than usual.
Initially, I worried that these changes would disrupt my creative flow, but they didn’t. In fact, they did quite the opposite. They reminded me of the importance of being flexible in my plans, adapting to life’s uncertainties, and being mindful of every moment no matter how it unfolds. Whether I was managing the busy morning school run, enjoying the serenity of a post-drop-off walk, or finding time to write in the afternoon, I realised that being flexible and present allowed me to remain grounded and focused, even when things didn’t go as planned (like breaking my noise-cancelling headphones this morning before my morning walk).
One thing that’s become clear to me this week is that mindfulness isn’t reserved for meditation or moments of stillness.
It’s about being present and fully engaged in whatever moment I find myself in, whether it’s during a walk, while writing, or even in the everyday tasks of life.
The small sensory details that surround us; the chirping of birds, the warmth of the sun, the coolness of the air, are all potential sources of creativity, if only we take the time to notice them. These elements have been great for my writing in ways I hadn’t anticipated. They’ve given me a deeper well to draw from, reminding me that inspiration is always present, waiting to be tapped into when we slow down enough to see it.
As I prepare for what Week 7 holds,
I’m carrying these lessons of mindfulness and flexibility with me. Life’s flow isn’t always predictable, and my routine may shift, but I’ve learned that by staying present, I can still accomplish what I set out to do.
Writing short stories and poems has not only expanded my creative toolkit, but it’s also taught me to appreciate the beauty in the ordinary, to be more mindful of the world around me, and to be inspired to create even from the smallest details of my day. I’m eager to see where this newfound awareness will take me in the weeks ahead, and I encourage you to find those moments of mindfulness in your own life.
