“He who is not everyday conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
The moment I committed to doing something as big as my 90-day challenge, the excitement was electric. I imagined the result—the success, the transformation, the proud “I did it” feeling. But then reality tapped me on the shoulder and whispered, “Are you sure you’re ready for this?”
That was one week ago, standing on the edge of my 90-day challenge. I was ready to elevate my writing game, get healthier, and share every bit of it with everyone who cared to listen. But what I didn’t anticipate was that the hardest part wouldn’t be the writing or the workouts—it would be simply starting.
It Began On Day 1
Day 1 wasn’t glamorous. To be honest, it was downright intimidating. The thought of writing daily, sticking to a healthy lifestyle, and putting it all out there for the world to see was enough to send my inner critic into overdrive. There was a voice in my head saying, “What if you fail?”—and I’ll bet you’ve heard that voice too.
But here’s what I’ve realised at the end of week 1: the fear of starting is often bigger than the challenge itself.
It’s easy to let that fear stop us in our tracks, but here’s the secret I learned this week—once you take that first step, the fear starts to fade. The unknown becomes a little more familiar, and the journey begins to feel less daunting.
The Daily Writing, Health, and Small Wins
Now, let’s talk about the nitty-gritty of week 1.
On the writing front, I dove headfirst into a daily routine. At first, the blank page felt like a mountain I had to climb. But as the days went by, I found my rhythm. Some days, the words flowed effortlessly; other days, it was a grind. But showing up every day made all the difference.
Then there’s the health side of things. If I’m being honest, changing old habits is no walk in the park (literally and figuratively). My body wasn’t thrilled with the new diet, and those first few walks were more of a wake-up call than a victory lap. But, each day brought progress—whether it was resisting a craving or completing a walk that felt impossible just days before. I’m looking forward to the excitement that some people say comes with being able to walk 10,000 steps daily.
Anyway, what’s my takeaway from week 1? Small wins add up. It’s easy to get discouraged when you’re focusing on the big picture, but this week has taught me that progress isn’t always loud or dramatic. Sometimes, it’s quiet and steady—and that’s okay.
What I’m Learning About Fear—and How to Beat It
Fear played a starring role in week 1, but it didn’t get the best of me. I learned that fear isn’t the enemy—it’s a signal that you’re about to do something important. It’s uncomfortable, sure, but it’s also a sign of growth. The trick is to push through it and push through I did.
Here’s what helped me:
- Embrace the discomfort: Growth doesn’t happen in the comfort zone. The more I leaned into the awkwardness of starting something new, the easier it became to move forward. Even my daily videos documenting my progress are the most amateur quality I’ve seen online. But I’m admitting that I’m not a great video editor and I’m pushing myself to learn video editing and make better videos.
- Focus on one step at a time: The whole challenge felt overwhelming when I thought about the big picture, but when I focused on just one day, one task, and one healthy choice, it felt manageable.
- Stay accountable: Sharing my journey with you has been a huge motivator. There’s something powerful about knowing people are rooting for you and holding you accountable. Or even just watching you to see you fail. Those are both good motivators.
Looking Ahead To Week 2 and Beyond
With week 1 in the books, I’m feeling more confident! I know the next few weeks will bring new challenges, but I’m ready for them. I’ve already proven to myself that I can start, and that’s often the hardest part. Now, it’s all about building on that momentum.
As I move into week 2, I’ll continue to push myself to write daily and stay on track with my health goals. But I’ll also be focusing on something else: consistency. It’s not about being perfect every day, it’s about showing up—even on the tough days.
And here’s my challenge to you: What’s something you’ve been wanting to start but haven’t? Maybe it’s a creative project, a fitness goal, or a personal mission. Whatever it is, I encourage you to take that first step today. Fear will always be there, but so will the possibility of success—and the only way to find out is to start.
Here’s to another week of growth, small wins, and fearless progress. Let’s see where we end up in 90 days!
