“Some journeys in life can only be travelled alone.” – Ken Poirot.
“Life is stressful!”
I can’t count how many times I’ve thought and said those words. It seems like everywhere I turn, I face some kind of demand with its own pressure which I have to deal with. From work to finances, there’s a truckload of pressure that I, and I’m sure every other human alive, have to deal with.
I made the mistake of telling my mum that I needed a vacation from life, I’ll spare you from the prayers and positive affirmations I had to endure as a result of that. But that did not take away from the fact that I needed to take some ‘off’ time from everything.
With all the benefits of spending time with our families, friends, and people who give us positive vibes, the benefits of finding some alone time are a lot too. It’s important to get to know ourselves better, to renew our spirit, regroup, reflect on our lives, and weigh different angles of matters before making decisions or life choices.
I have tried at different times to take some time off for myself but I only end up feeling guilty and then I forget about it all together. But it wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago when I saw a TEDx video by Laura Vanderkam about gaining control of our free time that I decided to make some adjustments. Since I don’t have a lot of free time, I’ve had to adjust some of those principles to suit my lifestyle.
I know that some of my loved ones were quite uncomfortable with me wanting to spend some time alone initially, but slowly, they are coming to understand that I need that for my sanity. I have come to love and anticipate those stolen moments of going to the movies alone, cleaning out my closet to the sound of music blasting through my headphones, taking a long walk as part of my weekly exercise routine, and more.
The benefits are endless! Even if for only ten to fifteen minutes a day, you will feel refreshed and in a good space in your head to clearly deal with things. Alone with your thoughts, you will open the doors for fresh ideas to come through.
My personal health and sanity is one thing I have resolved not to compromise on my journey to building a wildly successful life and career and I will continue to ensure that I get the quality time necessary for me to perform at my optimum level.
So, do you make time, to spend time with yourself? Share your thoughts with me in the comments below. I would love to hear from you.
XoXo,
