Creating My 2018 Goals

Creating My 2018 Goals | The Process

“The thing about goals is that living without them is a lot more fun, in the short run. It seems to me, though, that the people who get things done, who lead, who grow, and who make impact…those people have goals.” – Seth Godin.

I have been dreaming of the things I want to achieve in 2018 since last year when I started creating my 2018 goals. I had a number of things I longed to achieve this year, and every one of them felt more difficult than the last one. But, rather than try to figure things out by myself, I decided to talk about these ideas with people who could help me figure it all out. 2 of such people who helped me figure things out, create a better picture of everything, and finally set my goals for 2018 are Elizabeth Osho of So.Me Solutions and Charles O’Tudor of Adstrat Branding Management Consortium.

Back in 2017, while having a conversation during lunch one sunny afternoon at Paranga Restaurant in Cape Town, Elizabeth Osho, Sisi Yemmie of Sisiyemmie.com, and I began talking about how far we had gone with our 2017 goals and our wishes for the future. I remember telling them some of the wishes and ideas I had for 2018. Elizabeth, being an ideas person, took all of those ideas and made them bigger and better. She even gave me tips on how I could execute some of those ideas and I left lunch that day convinced that I knew what I wanted to do with my life in 2018.

With Elizabeth, my mind was free to dream, to imagine all that I wanted to be and do and even more things that I had never thought about. We talked about my passion for writing and blogging, my love for inspiring people and seeing them grow, my hunger to travel and meet people, and my desire to grow in my career and be a better person. She talked me into starting, even with baby steps, and we ended that conversation with her using her own life story to motivate me. All this while, we were at lunch with some other people but she could as well have been talking to just me as I was soaking up every word she said like a sponge.

As soon as I got back to Nigeria, I had a meeting fixed with renowned Brand Strategist, Mr. Charles O’Tudor, who helped me break down those ideas and personal limitations that have the potential to hinder me from realising those ideas. I can’t begin to explain how calm I felt having created a game plan for bringing all those ideas to an achievable goal level.

Mr. Charles O’Tudor was merciless and direct with his questions that traced the root of each of those dreams that formed the foundation of all of my goals. At some point, I felt like I was looking at myself in a mirror while answering all of the questions, both those that he asked directly and those that were in the Personal Brand Guide, because the questions forced me to be brutally honest and I am thankful for that.

In case you are yet to set your goals for this new year, don’t put yourself under unnecessary pressure to set those goals by yourself. Reach out to some people who are experienced in the field(s) that align with what you want for yourself, talk to people, learn from their experiences, and use all that you learn to set achievable goals for yourself. Have fun with the entire process and you will be excited to crush them before the year ends!
